Greenwood Forest to build Affordable Housing

Written by Julie Page:

I was excited to learn this week that Greenwood Forest Baptist Church has big plans for developing affordable housing!  They plan to tear down an old building, including their former sanctuary and the Children’s Center, and build a 5-story building in that space.  The first floor of the new building will house the new Children’s Center, with expanded hours including after-school care and summer camp through their partnership with the YMCA.  You may have seen that Greenwood Forest recently received a $900,000 grant from Wake County.  This is support for the affordable child care.  The second floor will be transitional housing for families in The Carying Place program, allowing them to increase their capacity for working with families who are at risk or have lost their home.  Floors 3, 4, and 5 will be affordable apartments built and managed by DHIC, one of the few developers in the area that specializes in affordable housing.  In addition,  the Town of Cary owns land that begins at the edge of the church parking lot, goes behind the funeral home and along Kilmayne Road.  Their plan is to build affordable townhomes on this property.

This plan involves some great partnerships to address the issues of affordable housing and affordable child care.  All of this requires rezoning and funding, of course, so I'm eager to see how it develops as they progress.  We can support their efforts by providing feedback and/or attending the community meeting about the proposal and rezoning, which will probably be in early May.  I’m also planning to ask for a letter of support for this project from Cary Presbyterian.  This is what I know right now, but I signed up to receive email updates.  I will do my best to keep you informed, and if you have questions, please contact Julie Page, pagejb4@gmail.com.
