national & global missions

Cary Presbyterian supports a variety of national and international missions through special offerings, fundraising and mission activities, including annual mission trips to Appalachia and Guatemala. Through our denomination, the Presbyterian Church (USA), CPC provides ongoing support to missionaries in Madagascar and special offerings to help neighbors in need around the world.

Appalachian Service Project (ASP)

Every summer since 1990 (with the exception of 2020 due to COVID-19), CPC has sent intergenerational teams to ASP sites in rural Appalachia (including Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, or West Virginia) where they spend one week repairing residents’ homes, interacting with those living in the area, and growing in their understanding of God’s service to others. At the site, team members are assigned various jobs, such as painting, carpentry and roofing, to assist in repairing homes. Applications for spots on the CPC team are generally available in February for adults and youth who have completed 8th grade.
Visit their website for more information about the national organization.

Guatemala

CPC’s ministry in Guatemala is unique international work, initiated by members of our congregation through a Covenantal Partnership with Monte Sinai Iglesia Presbyterian in the highland town of Nimasac, about an hour from the city of Quetzaltenango. We work with the indigenous people of Guatemala, the Maya, who have been consistently marginalized by several in-country factors: the civil war that ended only 20 years ago, prejudice, poverty, and remoteness.
In Nimisac, our work includes education through scholarships to young students, economic development through agricultural projects, technology delivery through the creation of a computer lab, the addition of a second story to the church, offering Bible study and church organization help, and on-site medical clinics during our visits. Most of all, our work is based on forming relationships with the people. CPC also has a partnership with a 501(c)3 non-profit called Esperanza de Guatemala, which focuses on education and economic development. These missions have some overlap. Esperanza has its own Facebook page: Esperanza Guatemala Missions.
How can you help?
  • Consider traveling with us to Guatemala (partial scholarships for church members are available). Since our mission in Nimasac is relationship-based, it is important that we visit to form or continue relationships. Week-long trips ordinarily taken in mid-October.
  • Make a direct donation to support ongoing work.
  • Participate in periodic drives for school or health-related supply donations.

Haiti

CPC provides financial assistance to Hearts with Haiti, an organization that fosters a brighter future for young people in Haiti through the homes of the St. Joseph family. For more information, visit their website

Madagascar Missionaries

CPC currently supports Presbyterian missionaries, Dan and Elizabeth Turk, in Madagascar. Dan Turk works on reforestation and other environmental projects in Madagascar. Elizabeth is a nurse and works on a variety of public health projects. For out more about the Turks and their work, visit https://www.presbyterianmission.org/ministries/missionconnections/dr-daniell-and-elizabeth-turk/

Presbyterian Coffee Project

CPC proudly serves and sells Equal Exchange coffee through the Presbyterian Coffee Project. “Fairly traded” coffee, tea, chocolate, and olive oil is available for sale near the Fellowship Hall on All Together Sundays (typically the last Sunday of each month). Churches can now reach out to our neighbors overseas not only with the prayers and offerings we give, but with the goods and services we purchase. Buying fairly traded products through the Presbyterian Coffee Project ensures that more of the money we spend on coffee reaches the hardworking farmers who actually grow it.
All proceeds support CPC’s “Esperanza” mission work in Guatemala.

Rise Against Hunger

Rise Against Hunger is driven by the vision of a world without hunger. Its mission is to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable and creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources. At CPC, inter-generational teams meet in a fun atmosphere at the church to pack 10,000 meals for school lunches around the world (including Guatemala and Haiti) at certain scheduled times during the year. The meals provide nutrition and encourage school attendance.
