Ties That Bind

Through TTB, our members and friends have the opportunity to record the stories of our lives as a means of honoring one another and God while also preserving our history and the human voice.

Ties That Bind (TTB) is an audio recording ministry,  patterned after NPR’s StoryCorps program. It was approved by Session in the spring of 2016 as a means of addressing one of the top three priorities established by our congregation – to be more intentional in our effort to connect with one another, our own community and the world.

The congregants of CPC identified “feeling connected” as one of their top priorities stemming from the Conversations @ CPC survey. In the spring of 2016, Session unanimously approved elder Caroline Derifaj’s motion to start an audio recording project at CPC in response to that need.

  • Stories about CPC as a church through the years
  • Conversations between friends and loved ones: youth, parents, seniors, mentors, friends, siblings, friends, teachers, senior high graduates, etc.
  • Memories of ASP (Appalachia Service Project), Esperanza (Guatemala mission trip), Montreat and Massanetta (youth retreats)

You may decide that you would like to honor a friend, a youth or a family member by having an audio-only recorded conversation with that person. Video is not involved- only audio! TTB is here to help answer any questions, offer suggested interview tips and advice. If requested, a CPC facilitator can be present during the interview to help with logistics. A copy of the interview will be offered as a memento to each participant after the completion of the interview. The whole session takes no more than an hour. No fancy equipment is involved – no microphones or headphones- just the use of the Voice Memo app on an iPhone or Droid.

With the aid of iPhone and Droid technology, a recording can take place anywhere you can find a quiet place that does not echo. This could be at your home, a hospital, school, workplace or at CPC, for example.

You can send recordings via iMessage, email, and more!

  1. Launch the Voice Memo app from your Home screen.
  2. Tap the recording you’d like to share.
  3. Tap the share button on the bottom left of the screen. It’s the box with the upward arrow.
  4. Tap the method by which you’d like to share your Voice Memo. Either email it to cderifaj@gmail.com or text the file to 919-452-5095.

Each participant will be offered a CD copy of the full interview as a memento. If clips were made and played in worship, they will be stored on SoundCloud and a link to the clip will be provided on the TTB web page. Interviews will not be shared with others unless, upon the request of TTB, permission is given by the participants to allow a short clip to be played in worship and posted publicly.

Please contact Caroline Derifaj at cderifaj@gmail.com or 919-452-5095. Please also understand that unless you plan to do the interview yourself, not all suggestions can be accommodated. However, we welcome your input!

My story is important not because it is mine, God knows, but because if I tell it anything like right, the chances are you will recognize that in many ways it is also yours… it is precisely through these stories in all their particularity…that God makes himself known to each of us more powerfully and personally.
